Thank you for visiting my blog, To Be Foodie!
I learned about World Food Day in my food culture class. On this page, I'm going to share what I learned about World Food Day.
Each student had been assigned some region and did some research on things related to World Food Day. My assigned regions were South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.), Southeast Asia (Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines, etc.), and Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, etc.).
According to the homepage of the United Nations, World Food Day is "observed annually on 16 October to highlight the millions of people worldwide who cannot afford a healthy diet and the need for regular access to nutritious food." "The theme for 2022 is Leave NO ONE behind."
- South Asia
- The most serious food-related problem in India is the huge population and lack of awareness. In Chennai, India, there was a one-day event. "The main theme for the event was, Grow safely, Eat healthy. The aim is to promote global awareness and action for achieving food security, safety and nutrition and to highlight the need to ensure a healthy daily diet for everyone mainly to eradicate malnutrition from the country. The one-day event is for the general public, researchers, faculty and student community."
- The most serious food-related problem in Pakistan is the lack of food. The population is increasing at a high rate, but food production is not increasing like the population. In Pakistan, there was an event, World Food Day in Pakistan. "The mime performance by renowned Pakistani Kathak dancer and her team was the most appreciated moment. Four UN organizations and agencies-UNIDO, UNICEF, IFAD, and WFP-participated in the event and contributed financially. In addition, the Ministry of Food Security and Research of the Government of Pakistan also collaborated and assisted in organizing the event. The UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Julian Harneis, was one of the main speakers and spoke on behalf of all participating UN organizations and agencies. The event was attended by government officials, representatives from relevant ministries, civil society, UN organizations and agencies, academia, youth, and the media. A video message from QU Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, was also screened. In addition, awareness messages were posted on local means of transportation in Quetta-Balochistan. Fruit vendors and shopkeepers also posted them in prominent places. The FAO-Pakistan team, together with representatives of partner organizations, participated in a television program. Members of the FAO-Pakistan regional team also participated in radio programs. "
2. Southeast Asia
- The biggest food-related problem in Vietnam is unsafe food including street food. An official from the Vietnam Cancer Association claimed that unsafe food with its cancerous agents caused about 35% of cancer cases in Vietnam. The Viet Nam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), the FAO and the World Bank in Viet Nam co-organized a ceremony to celebrate the 42nd World Food Day (WFD) and the closing workshop for the Viet Nam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation project. The ceremony in Da Nang today was attended by Le Quoc Doanh – Vice Minister of MARD, RĂ©mi Nono Womdim – FAO Representative in Viet Nam, and Dina Umali-Deininger, Agriculture and Food Practice Manager for the East Asia and Pacific Region of the World Bank, together with provincial leaders, representatives of international organizations, non-governmental organizations, development partners, local enterprises, cooperatives and farmers in the project areas.
What we can do for World Food Day is to be aware of food problems in this world. Fortunately, I can get safe food anytime in everywhere in my environment. People in Japan can get safe food, but to maintain high safety quality, there are strict rules and the rules produce food loss in the country. I've never heard of World Food Day, and knowing about World Food Day was surely a big change of my mind. It reminded me that being able to get food and living safely is a rich environment. World Food Day is only one day in a year, but it is a good opportunity to think about how we need to relate to food.
